There is no doubt that a beautiful fresh flower arrangement adds beauty and elegance to the decor of a home. Knowing some unique ways to help keep the cut flowers fresh, speed up the assembly of the arrangement and enhance the appearance of the finished design will make the flower arrangement look more professional.

Ways to Retain the Freshness of Cut Flowers

  • If the flowers are being cut from the garden carry them in a heads-down position. This will ensure that heavy-headed flowers will not snap off.
  • Lay the flowers flat on a sheet of newspaper and wrap them into a bunch. Place the bunch in tepid water for up to five hours or overnight to condition them.
  • To reduce underwater decay, strip the stems of all the foliage that fall below the water line.
  • Prolong the freshness of an arrangement by spraying the flowers with tepid water morning and night.

Flowers with Woody Stems

  • Preserve or revive flowers with woody stems by softly pounding the bottom two inches of the stem prior to putting them in water.
  • Ensure woody stemmed flowers absorb enough water by paring off the bark from the bottom two inches and crosscut the stems.

Flowers with Soft Stems and Heavy Heads

  • Stems of flowers such as Gerberas can be strengthened by wrapping thin wire around the length of the stem.
  • The bent stem of a heavy-headed flower can be repaired by pushing a toothpick through the centre of the flower and into the stem.

Rapid Opening Flowers

Flowers such as Roses, Tulips and Lilies tend to open rapidly in warm weather. To avoid blooms from opening while arranging, use sticky tape to lightly keep the petals together. Remove the tape shortly before the arrangement is displayed.

Securing of Flowers and Foliage in the Container

There are various materials that can be used to secure the flowers and leaves in the container. The type of base used will be dictated to by the size and shape of the vase and the variety of the flowers used.

Flower arrangement mounted in chicken wire

The most common types of bases are:

  • Oasis- a green ‘sponge-like’ material which has to be well soaked (preferably overnight) into which flowers and foliage can be inserted. These usually come in rectangular blocks but can be easily cut into any desired shape. Using oasis has the added advantage of not having to use excessive amounts of water since the oasis itself is saturated with water.
  • Pinhoder- a small heavy base with spikes sticking up. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The stems of flowers and leaves can be secured on to the spikes.
  • Chicken wire- crumpled chicken wire is useful if the vase used for the arrangement is tall or very large. The stems of the flowers are inserted into the holes in the chicken wire.

Knowing the little tricks of the trade can help to achieve a more professional finish to the fresh flower arrangement.

The holidays bring many joys, and often the festivities include visits from beloved friends and relatives. Make them feel at home with these simple steps for preparation and bedroom decor.

Preparing a Guest Room

In the weeks before your guest arrives, give the room a thorough cleaning. Vacuum, dust, and check for cobwebs. Portable furniture should be moved, and make sure you check under the bed! If the room is used infrequently, inspect the window treatment to make sure it is both free of dust and in good working order, so your guest can’t accidentally break shades or blinds while attempting to close them. If your schedule permits, do the top-to-bottom clean the week before the visit, otherwise you can clean well in advance and do a light dusting the day before.

How to Air Out an Unused Room

The day before, give the room a thorough airing, especially if the room is used infrequently. Shut the heat registers and the door, and open the windows wide enough to get the air moving in the room. Turn on the ceiling fan if you have one, or bring in a table top or stand fan, and place it opposite the windows. After a couple of hours, he room will be freezing but fresh!

You may be tempted to skip this step and use a room deodorizer instead, but keep in mind that more and more people have allergies, so choose one that is hypoallergenic with a mild aroma, as few things are more unpleasant than sleeping in a room with an unappealing smell. You may love the scent of geraniums, but your guest may not.

How to Prepare Your Office/Guest Room

If your guest room is also your office, spend some time clearing your desk and putting work away. Turn off the ringer on the phone, and if you’re okay with your guests checking their email on your office computer, let them know; otherwise, close the lid on the laptop or disconnect the keyboard on your desktop.

Contents of a Comfortable Guest Room

  • Chair – an armless chair can double as a luggage rack, a clothes holder or a place to sit to put on shoes.
  • Luggage rack – provide somewhere for your guest’s suitcase, especially if you prefer it not be placed on a desk or antique wood dresser. This can be an actual folding luggage rack, or a small table, ottoman, or piano or vanity bench.
  • Choice of pillows – provide two for each guest in a variety of types such as down, foam and fiberfill. Nothing ensures a good night’s sleep like resting your head on the same kind of pillow that’s on the bed at home!
  • Cotton sheet set including top sheet – resist the temptation to buy new polyester blend sheets for the occasion – they’re scratchy when they’re brand new and too warm for some people. Include a top sheet even if your comforter is in a duvet cover. Provide an extra blanket for those guests who get cold easily.
  • Night Stand – Your guests will appreciate a place to put their glasses, tissues, morning medications, and even denture holders in case they object to walking around a strange house without their teeth in, or are unable to make it safely to the bathroom without their glasses.
  • Reading lamp – Many people read before sleep, and a good host makes her guests welcome by providing the needs for comforting bedtime routines. Make sure the lamp is the proper height for reading in bed. If not, you can stack a short lamp on a pile of artfully arranged books to make it taller. Check the bulb beforehand.
  • Small Drying Rack – If you have a houseful of guests, some of which are sharing a bathroom, your visitors will appreciate a towel rack placed in their sleeping room. This means that their own towels will be clean and dry whenever they wish to use them.
  • Closet Space – if possible, provide your guest with hangers and a bit of space in the room’s closet, especially if their visit includes a dress-up occasion.
  • Electrical Outlet – in case your guests plan to use a small appliance in the bedroom, make sure that there’s a free outlet somewhere in view. Install an extension cord if the only outlet is behind the bed of a chest of drawers.

A good host makes guests welcome by anticipating their needs, and your happy and comfortable guests will make your holidays even more fun!

Copper takes on a wonderful patina after time, turning its shiny metallic finish into an aged rough surface with years of depth and a plethora of green hues. Learn to create a faux finish verdigris effect and suddenly inexpensive everyday items are transformed into valuable heirlooms, or at least they look like heirlooms.

Steps to painting a verigris faux finish

Verdigris Faux Finish Preparation

Before beginning the verdigris faux finishing process every item will need a little preparation.

  • Cleaning – The item that will receive a verdigris faux finish needs to be cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease build up. If the object is metal a light sanding with a fine sandpaper may help paint adhere.
  • Primer – A primer isn’t always necessary but it may be if the original item is too dark or a surface that is difficult for paint to adhere to. If the object is plastic then a primer designed for plastic is necessary. Use personal discretion to determine if a primer is called for.

Painting a Verdigris Finish

The painting part is the longest and most difficult part of the verdigris process. The good news is that it doesn’t require a skilled painter, in fact the worse the paint job the better. Remember to let the paint dry thoroughly between every application.

  • Base Coat – The base coat, not including any primers used, is needs to be a metallic paint. If the look attempted is meant to be an authentic verdigris then a copper metallic paint should be used. Cover the entire item in the paint, but don’t worry about getting a perfect finish.
  • Dark Green – The next coat of paint in the verdigris decorative painting process is a dark green coat which doesn’t cover all of the metallic paint, in fact it’s applied with a sponge so make sure to leave spots where the metallic finish shows through.
  • Lighter Greens – The same green paint can be used by adding white to lighten it. Apply the lighter shade(s) in the same manner as the dark green was applied, in blobs and haphazardly. Keep diluting the green with the white paint and adding additional coats until the finish reaches the desired level, with some of the metallic bronze and dark green still peeking through.

Finishing Touches on a Verdigris Project

The verdigris faux finish is almost done now and probably looks incredible but by completing the final two steps the project will become even more durable and authentic looking.

  • Blue Coat – To add the final, finishing touch, water down a light blue-grey latex paint and dab it onto the surface or brush on a thin watery layer evenly and then dab it off gently with a soft paper towel or white rag before it gets a chance to dry.
  • Clear Finish – Finally, after the entire piece has had a chance to thoroughly dry and cure it’s time to apply at least two coats of a clear polyurethane acrylic to give it a glossy finish and to protect the verdigris paint job.

Creating a verdigris faux finish is actually a very easy task, it just requires a lot of time waiting for paint to dry. But for anyone with some free time, a little creative skill and a vision almost anything can be given a verdigris finish.

Cheap home holiday decorating tips for cheap

Around the holidays people begin spending more time indoors and, quite frequently, they have an urge to redecorate their interiors. But redecorating can be expensive.

The following tips may help you give your home a new look for the season while keeping your budget in tact.

  • Undecorate. Take down old knickknacks and photos and accessories. It’s hard to create a new look without a blank canvas. And you may not even realize how tired some of your standard pieces seem until you get them out of the room. If it’s hard to take down that treasured family portrait just remind yourself, it’s just for a few months, then it goes right back above the mantle.
  • Go Shopping in Your Own Home. Look through your old decorations and accessories and bring back old favorites. Consider reserving a corner of your storage area for decorating items. This way you can frequently change out accessories so your house always has a fresh look.
  • Bring Back Your Family. Holidays are a time for family and friends. Show your loved ones how much they matter by decorating in their image. Find old photos and scatter them around the house. Have a collection of holiday photos of your family throughout the years framed together and make it the new centerpiece over the mantle.
  • Call In the Movers. Get some help if you need it, but move that furniture around. I used to have a winter configuration and a summer configuration for my living room. The winter one was closer and cozier and centered on the cold weather entertainment, the television. The summer one was more open and let traffic run right through the middle of the room.
  • Spend a Little. Update your look by spending a little money. Paint is cheap, so if you want to really create a new look, paint the room. Otherwise a little fabric goes a long way, make some throw pillows, purchase slipcovers for your furniture, get new bedding, pick out a festive shower curtain, buy some throws rugs and blankets. If you can sew, consider having a second set of curtains. These things do cost a bit BUT are much less expensive than actually redecorating an entire room.
  • Holiday Decorations Take Center Stage. You’re probably already spending a lot of time decorating for the holidays and your effort deserves to be noticed. Adjust your furniture and even lighting to highlight those treasured holiday keepsakes. Let your holiday spirit dictate your interior decorating plan for the season. If you’re doing a tree in blue and silver this year consider adding home accessories such as pillows, slipcovers and throw rugs, in those colors. The effect will be overwhelmingly fresh and give everyone that happy holiday feeling.
Check out this post for more tips on accessorizing for cheap

If gifts are stretching your budget these tips can help you create that festive atmosphere in your home while keeping your savings account relatively untouched. If you do decide to buy some accessories to spice things up, purchase those things that can be used time and again. Obviously, you don’t want to buy a throw rug that says Happy 2007! But think twice about those things decorated with Santa’s and angels. Try solid colors that make a bold holiday statement but could possibly be used in the future in a more generic setting. Basically, make your purchases wise ones that will last the test of time.

I don’t know about where you live, but where I’m at the weather has been beautiful. Its been warm during the days and gets a little cool in the evenings. Its the kind of weather that makes you want to be outside for at least part of it.

If you have a deck or patio you may have spent a little bit of time outside, but your deck may not be as inviting as it could be. Often this has little to do with the furniture.

Yes, it is important that you have furniture on your deck and that it be comfortable, but you probably have some already if you try to use your deck at all.

Need some tips on building a beautiful deck? Check out this post

What I’m talking about is the difference between a deck that draws you in and one that is just there.

One point I want to touch on first is safety. The vertical supports of your deck railings should not be more than a few inches apart. I hope that I don’t need to say that you need a railing. Even a low to the ground deck can cause some pain if someone accidentally steps off backwards. The reason for the small space between the vertical supports is so a small child can’t get their head stuck.

It may seem easy to say that you don’t have any small children on your deck but what happens if you get some new neighbors who do have small children?

Don’t worry. I have an easy and attractive fix. Go to your local lumber yard or landscape center and ask about their redwood lattice. It will usually come in differing thicknesses. A good one is the 1/4 inch thick version. Measure the height of your vertical supports and have the lattice cut length-wise to match this size and then nail it to your supports. The lattice will actually dress-up the look of your deck. This of course assumes that you deck railing is wood. You will have to vary this for other materials.

Another great way to dress up your deck is with hanging plants. You can find small evergreen shrubs that will work will potted and can be hung from the roof supports. You can also use small evergreen trees in Terra-cotta pots in the corners to add some color to your deck.

Learn more about using containers to add landscaping beauty here

If you have the ability you may consider having some fun with lighting. Have you noticed that a lot of outdoor cafes will string white Christmas lights and leave them up year round? You can do the same.

If you are planning on having a garden during the spring and summer months, why not use your garage as a storage location. Many use their garages to store lots of junk that they no longer need to use. Instead of letting items pile up, why not create a gardening wall in your garage. This is really very simple to do.

Organize All Your Garden Tools

The first things you will want to do are clean out the garage and organize all of the items. The best way to do this is to take all of the items out of the garage and then place them back into the garage in an organized fashion. Set up one wall to hold all of your gardening supplies. I would recommend that you visit your local Home Depot Store, and purchase some hooks. Hang up a nice amount of hooks so that you can store your supplies this way. This will give you more floor space for the larger items such as the planting soil, and additional supplies.

Put Your Garden Design Drawing on the Wall

Another item which you can add to your gardening wall is a diagram or picture of what you want your garden to look like. Some usually find pictures inside of a magazine and will use this as your guide. You can also draw your own sketch and use this. Having a drawing or general idea of how you want your garden to look is certainly a good idea. Hang this up in the center of your gardening wall. It can be the main focal point of the wall.

Check out 10 Steps to a dream garden if you’re interested in learning more about garden design drawings.

Add A Work Surface

A small desk for the area near your gardening wall is also a good idea. If you don’t like the idea of a table which will take up more space, then why not instead put up a simple shelf. You can purchase a long shelf that will run the entire length of the gardening wall. Be sure that when you install it, you make sure that it is secure. This is the perfect area to place all of your seeds, and your pots as well. Basically anything that can not be hung up should be placed on this shelf. I would recommend that you first draw a sketch of how you want your garden wall to be. This will help to keep everything neat and organized when you are ready to get started. Remember that you don’t want to go overboard but instead do your best to keep things as simple as possible.

Far too many of the chalkboards and memo boards made for kitchen message centers and by home phones are so dreadfully boring. Fortunately, this tin mini chalk board is super simple to create and looks so adorable when finished! Make one or several for your own home, or give as a perfect housewarming gift for a friend or family member.

To make a mini tin chalk board, you will need:

  • One eight inch tin scroll tile
  • Masking tape
  • Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Original Chrome
  • Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black
  • A piece of chalk
  • Craft knife
  • Magnet
  • Newspaper or drop cloth

Steps to making a chalk board

Cover your entire workspace with newspaper or a drop cloth to prevent overspray. When using spray paints, it is always important that your work area is well ventilated. Usually, this means an outdoor area. Also, use extreme caution when working with sharp items like craft tin or a craft knife which can cause a serious cut or other injury.

Lay the eight inch tin scroll tile flat on your workspace. With a craft knife, cut enough masking tape to completely cover the center of the tin tile. Adhere the tape to the tile, smoothing with your fingers to prevent any bubbles.

Spray the tin tile with an even coat of Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Original Chrome. (This causes a shinier finish than just leaving the galvanized tin alone.) Let the paint dry for a half an hour before adding a second coat. Dry completely.

If you are in need of some other budget friendly decorating ideas, check this post

Remove the masking tape. Apply another set of masking tape to the entire scroll area on the tin tile. It is extremely important that the tape is not bubbling to prevent any overspray from the next step in our project.

Apply one thick coat of Krylon Chalkboard Paint in Black to the center of the scroll tin tile. Let the chalkboard paint dry for a half an hour. Add a second coat. Let this layer dry for a half an hour. Add a third coat, and again dry for half an hour. Continue this process until you have built up enough chalkboard paint that the color is a rich black and a magnet easily sticks to the board. (The magnet should not slide or move when placed on the board with a piece of note paper.) Also test with a piece of chalk.

Remove all masking tape. Hang the chalkboard as desired, or place in a decorative plate display stand for an easy countertop viewing.

Your living room is a special place, and this special place does not have to be boring. You can add a romantic theme to any living room with a few simple home décor crafts. This article will provide you with step-by-step instructions on several home décor crafts that will create a romantic living room.
Scented Centerpiece

The centerpiece in your living room will add a lot of atmosphere to this room; it is important to have a romantic centerpiece if you want to include a romantic ambience to your living room. For this craft you will need some essential oils in romantic scents such as rose, jasmine, and vanilla; you will also need a glass bowl, candles of various sizes, some fake roses, and Epsom salts.

Start this craft by pouring about a cup and a half of Epsom salts in the glass bowll, add a few drops of essential oils, and mix the slats around to evenly coat them. Next gently shake the bowl to even the salts out, and press the candles into the center of the bowl in a free spirited fashion. Finally remove the rosebuds from the stems and place them around the candles. This lovely centerpiece will add a romantic touch to your living room, and you can change the salts or add more oil when the scent needs a boost.

2 Home Decor Crafts to Remanence up your Living Room

Stencil Walls

A simple and fun way to make your living room more romantic is by stenciling something romantic on the wall. This may be a simple love quote, a rose border, or an intricate heart design; feel free to let your romantic nature be the guide when picking the stencil for this romantic home décor craft. For this craft you will need a stencil, waterproof paint, paper towels, a paper plate, stenciling brushes, and painter’s tape.

Start by gently taping your stencil top the wall and pour some paint onto a plate. Next dab your brush in the paint and dab it a couple more times onto the paper towel. When stenciling you want a light layer of couple and you want to work in a bouncing motion. Do not try to make brush strokes or use a lot of paint at once. This will lead to paint seeping under the stencil. Start at the outside edge of the stencil and dab up and down in a bouncing motion until you have colored the entire space. This romantic home décor craft is easy and fun to complete.

Besides stenciling on the wall, you can also try wallpaper, learn more in this post

clean your carpets before the holidays

Keeping home carpets clean is important to maintaining a healthy environment. Dirt and allergen particles from carpets can enter the air causing poor air quality, that can aggravate allergies asthma and other breathing problems. Home carpet cleaning removes dirt, debris and allergens from carpet fibers. Generally, vacuum carpets on a regular basis, such as once or twice a week, but heavy traffic areas may need vacuuming more often.

If carpets become heavily soiled, steam cleaning may be necessary.

Vacuum Carpet

deep cleaning carpets can make them look newBefore vacuuming carpets, make sure to remove all clutter from carpets. This is especially important in children’s bedrooms where small toys or toy parts may litter carpet. Some small items, such as paper clips, rubber bands and marbles can damage vacuum cleaners.

Removing dirt or loose soil that remains on carpet surfaces prevent it from penetrating deep into the carpet or embedded by foot traffic.

When vacuuming, use a slow, deliberate forward motion pushing the vacuum cleaner a few feet at a time, then reverse the direction. The vacuum cleaner will operate more efficiently to remove dirt and allergens.

While vacuuming, if a stain is found, it is important to attempt stain removal as quickly as possible. Usually, the longer a carpet stain remains, the more difficult it is to remove. If liquid from the stain soaks into the carpet padding, mold can grow which can contribute to poor air quality.

Have a particularly troubling stain? Check out this post, to learn how to remove carpet stains!

Steam Cleaning Carpet

steam cleaning is great for your carpetSteam cleaning carpet is a way to deep clean heavily soiled carpet. Steam cleaning involves high temperature and pressure to clean carpet. Purchasing or renting a steam cleaner, sometimes called wet-clean machine, from a grocery or hardware store, will be necessary for the do-it-yourselfer. Professional carpet cleaning companies are available for people who want carpets deep cleaned, but do not have the time for a carpet cleaning project.

Remove all furniture before beginning the steam cleaning process, so the entire carpet is available for cleaning.

Vacuuming the carpet before steam cleaning is important to remove any loose dirt and debris.

Pre-treat any stains on the carpet before beginning the steaming process. Read the directions for operation of the carpet steamer and clean the carpet.

Allow at least 24 hours for the carpet to dry before walking on it. If possible, open windows to allow air to circulate and help with the drying process or turn on a fan to circulate air for faster drying.

Vacuuming and steam cleaning remove dirt, debris and allergens from the carpet fibers. Since steam cleaning carpet is more time consuming than vacuuming carpet, many people choose to employ professional carpet cleaning companies for steam cleaning. Keeping home carpets clean by vacuuming regularly and steam cleaning when necessary will contribute to maintaining a healthy environment.

How to dry flowers by air drying

air drying flowers is an easy way to use them for craftsThis is also a very easy flower drying technique, but it does take patience. I used this method to preserve my wedding bouquet and it worked beautifully, but it did take almost a year to complete.

  1. Separate flowers into several small groupings. Remove all excess foliage from the stems. You will need to place 6 – 8 flowers in each group.
  2. Use string and tie around the stems of the flowers to securely hold them together. Do this with each group.
  3. These flowers will need to hang upside down in a very dark room. I used a closet that we rarely used and tied each string to a wire hanger to keep them in place. After almost a year, I removed the dried flowers and placed them in a vase.
