The timeless allure of wooden flooring brings a touch of warmth and character to any room within a home. The innate qualities of wood contribute to a visual richness and depth that sets it apart, often unmatched by other flooring options. As the demand for hardwood flooring continues to rise, manufacturers are diligently expanding their offerings to meet this surge, presenting improved finishes and employing advanced construction techniques.

Hardwood floors span a diverse spectrum of wood species, colors, and widths. Beyond the conventional hardwoods such as red oak, white oak, maple, and ash, the market now showcases exotic hardwood species sourced from various corners of the world. These exotic hardwoods afford homeowners the opportunity to articulate their unique decorative preferences with a distinctive and uncommon floor. The multitude of hardwood flooring options available today can make the selection process challenging, given the extensive array of choices in terms of wood species, colors, and styles.

Manufacturers are responding to this demand by not only enhancing the quality of their finishes but also by employing superior construction techniques. This dedication to innovation allows homeowners to enjoy a broader range of choices, ensuring that the hardwood flooring selected aligns seamlessly with individual tastes and the overall design aesthetic of the home. The evolving landscape of hardwood flooring options provides an exciting opportunity for homeowners to make a statement through a flooring choice that is as unique as it is enduring.

Varieties of Wood Flooring

Solid Wood Flooring: Comprising a single, unbroken piece of wood with tongue and groove sides, solid wood floors are available in pre-finished or unfinished styles. They are recommended for nail-down installations, but caution should be exercised as they are sensitive to moisture. Installing these floors below ground level or directly over a concrete slab is discouraged due to their susceptibility to moisture. The beauty of solid wood floors lies in their ability to be refinished or recoated multiple times, enhancing their appeal and longevity. Some solid wood floors, over a century old, still maintain their excellent condition.

It’s important to note that all solid wood floors respond to moisture fluctuations. During winter heating months, moisture loss causes contraction, leading to unsightly gaps between planks. Conversely, in humid summer conditions, the wood expands, closing these gaps. Excessive moisture may result in cupping or buckling of wood planks. Proper installation, allowing for expansion around the perimeter, and acclimatization of the wood before installation are critical steps for solid strip floor longevity.

Engineered Wood Flooring: Engineered wood floors consist of multiple wood plies bonded together. The center core, usually a softer wood material, forms the tongue and groove, while a hardwood finish layer is affixed on top. Another softer wood ply is attached beneath the core. This bottom ply, also known as the finish layer, can be crafted from various wood species.

Wood naturally expands in a specific direction, typically across the width of planks rather than along their length, particularly in the presence of moisture. To counteract this, engineered plank manufacturers employ cross-ply construction. By placing each ply in the opposite direction, the plies negate each other’s expansion or contraction with changes in humidity. Engineered wood floors are designed for floating installations and can be either glued together or equipped with a click system for ease of installation.

Veneer wood floors are very similar to laminate floors. The only difference is that with a veneer flooring to top wear layer is a thin piece or real hardwood instead of a photographic image as in laminates. Veneer flooring is usually around 8mm in thickness with the top hardwood layer being around 0.7mm. Advantages of a veneer floors are that they are fast and easy to install and you have a real hardwood floor.

Factory Prefinished Wood Flooring

The majority of factory-finished hardwood floors undergo the application of multiple finish coats to the wood’s surface. For instance, numerous wood floor companies opt for the application of 6-10 coats of UV-cured urethane, a process that would prove exceptionally challenging for someone attempting a job site finish. This complexity, coupled with the time-consuming nature of such an undertaking, is one of the driving factors behind the increasing preference for prefinished hardwood floors among flooring mechanics, retailers, and builders. Unlike the conventional method that involves several days of installation and finishing, a prefinished hardwood floor can typically be completed in a single day.

Various finishes are commonly employed, including:

  1. UV-Cured: Factory finishes cured using ultraviolet lights rather than heat.
  2. Polyurethane: A clear, robust, and durable finish applied as a protective wear layer.
  3. Acrylic-Urethane: Similar to polyurethane but with a slightly different chemical composition, offering comparable benefits.
  4. Aluminum Oxide: Infused into the urethane finish to enhance abrasion resistance in the wear layer, gaining popularity, especially in higher-grade wood floors.

Additionally, there is the innovative approach of Acrylic Impregnated finishes, where acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood. This process results in increased hardness, followed by the application of a protective wear layer over the wood surface. The diversity in finishes reflects the continuous advancements in the industry, offering consumers a range of choices tailored to their preferences and the specific requirements of their living spaces.

Unfinished Wood Flooring: Tailoring Elegance to Your Tastes

When the quest for a truly personalized, custom-stained hardwood floor arises or the desire to harmonize with existing trim becomes paramount, the answer lies in the realm of unfinished hardwood flooring. The term “unfinished” in this context signifies embarking on the flooring journey with a pristine, bare hardwood canvas. What follows is a meticulous process conducted within the confines of your home—sanding, staining, and finishing—an endeavor that, while potentially entailing some temporary disruption, ultimately culminates in a floor finish that perfectly aligns with your unique preferences and requirements.

The Art of Installation Options:

  1. Nail Down: This traditional method employs secret nails, a wood flooring nailer, and a mallet. It seamlessly secures the flooring to the subfloor, making it an excellent choice for Solid Strip floors or Plank floors. Ideal for wooden subfloors or batons, this installation technique promises a timeless, enduring connection with the foundation of your home.
  2. Glue Down: For those exploring the realm of engineered wood floors and parquets, the glue-down method offers a secure embrace. This process involves the meticulous spreading of recommended glue across the subfloor, providing a stable foundation for the flooring to nestle into. The result is a cohesive and steadfast bond between the flooring and its substrate.
  3. Floating: Introducing an element of innovation, the floating method entails placing a thin underlay between the wood flooring and the subfloor. A recommended wood glue is then thoughtfully applied to the tongue and groove of each plank, fostering a harmonious interlocking of the pieces. This swift, straightforward, and clean installation approach is particularly well-suited for Engineered & Veneer floors, offering both efficiency and aesthetic appeal.

The Journey to Timeless Elegance: The allure of unfinished wood flooring lies not only in the opportunity for customization but also in the journey toward achieving timeless elegance. The process may unfold over several days, requiring patience and meticulous attention to detail, but the reward is an unparalleled floor finish that seamlessly integrates with your vision for your living space.

The Unmatched Appeal of Customization: Unfinished wood flooring grants you the unique ability to dictate the final appearance of your floor. From selecting the perfect stain that complements your decor to ensuring that the finish aligns with your lifestyle needs, every step in the finishing process is a brushstroke on the canvas of your personalized aesthetic.
